Phase Change Material, Geopolymer Concrete, Energy Saving, Building Envelope.
A Civil Engineering student currently at the senior
level or pursuing a Master’s Degree with a background in materials and Geopolymers.
All relevant results will be published in international journals and presented at national and international conferences. In addition, if these materials perform well, the patentability of any new results will be considered before any public disclosure.
Geopolymer concrete is a type of concrete that is made by reacting aluminate and silicate-bearing materials with a caustic activator, such as fly ash or slag from iron and metal production. It is a more sustainable alternative to Ordinary Portland Cement OPC, showing lower thermal energy and CO2 emissions across all concrete classifications. In fact, it is an environmentally superior concrete that could use up to 90% industrial by-product waste materials while producing up to 80% lower CO2 emissions. It is sustainable and energy efficient. Using geopolymer-enhanced materials in building envelopes, including hospitals, will directly relate to more environmentally sustainable buildings, reducing energy demands.
To validate the framework, quality tests must be performed on the materials. Initial tests were conducted at NDU labs; however, many still need to be done due to their unavailability in Lebanon. The objective of this training is to conduct these remaining tests to get a full image of the properties of these materials. These tests include workability, compressive and bond strength tests, thermal stability, thermal conductivity/resistance, thermal expansion, sound, and aging tests.
